Designing a complex tool testing software

Work Project: Fastening Technology software design of CEUS 10 for Kistler Instruments, Switzerland

The challenge

Working as the lead designer supporting the rethink and simplification of a complex tool testing software for the automotive and the fastening technology industry, with simple to use interfaces requiring minimal training, to deliver an intuitive and approachable software for tool testing professionals.

Understanding

I worked with various stakeholders to better understand the very technical and complex domain which involved speaking to subject matter experts, service specialists and, sales and marketing personnel to build up a picture of the ‘end-user’, in addition to receiving deep training myself.

Solution

In various iterations a functional and intuitive concept was crafted. The goal of the project was to convey professionalism, measurement excellence whilst providing all possible manner of possibilites ‘under the hood’ in an easy to navigate manner.

Designing with a system

Defining all the basic elements in advance helped to design fast and consistently throughout the project. Style changes later on were easy to orchestrate.

Implanting the DNA

The CEUS DNA consisting of colors, shapes, graphs, icons, typography and visuals which were redefined and implanted into every page to give it strong visual consistency.

Impact

A functional and intuitive system requiring substantially less training than the previous software. Feedback from customers, sales teams, and management has been overwhelmingly positive streamlining previously lengthy and overly complex measurement processes.
